Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
