This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the capital.
