In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
