For those who have experienced this acclaimed title, or most other action-adventure title, you're probably familiar with the wonderful feature called the “rolling dodge.” This avoidance maneuver lets your avatar to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to dodge all incoming damage and gain space from the bad guy. Appears practical, doesn't it?
This rolling move, nevertheless, has attracted significant backlash, and not only because of the rolling; some have dubbed it dumb, a cop-out, and an unbelievable technique — and occasionally, I concur. Just imagine me tumbling about local Doppler gangs in a well-known fantasy game — they can't hit me! But the title's dodge roll is the dodge roll to top all dodge rolls evasion moves, and I'll tell you why.
For this particular game, the creators discovered a clever approach to respond to all views claiming the maneuver is overly simple: just grant each opponent unreasonable strength, increase it further, and all heroes who ventures close them will be eternally grateful because of their evasion move, me included. Given the intense difficulty, pulling off a perfect dodge comes across as a triumph, not a cheat.
No other evasion method in this RPG comes close to this sense of satisfaction and dependability, because swift moves provide minimal movement and guard stances get quickly shattered by tough opponents. A person once suggested hopping as the main Elden Ring dodging technique, but besides failing to offer ideal movement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit might boost my prospects of beating enemies (lack of skill, maybe).
Although the dodge roll grants reprieve in a famously difficult title, it isn't without skill. Firstly, this title's rolling dodge only triggers a frame of protection following you release the dodge button, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from perilous circumstances. Additionally, while it might carry you off from foes, it's significantly more useful to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, optimally at their back, and deliver attacks. Lastly, it remains necessary to grasp and foresee foe assaults, because rolling prematurely of a prolonged preparation might terminate your protection prior to the hit connecting… resulting in severe damage.
Even though rolling-dodging in fast repetition might seem rather absurd (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't truly feasible in Elden Ring. Of course, that fails to transform it into a believable battle technique — exactly the reason it would be pure horror to experience it in a product like a realism-focused RPG — but this is a flashy fantasy title being considered, so who cares?
Similar to any respectable rolling dodge, Elden Ring's evasion sequence is enhanced with a brief tumbling leap at the beginning, giving it an energetic feel instead of placing the avatar onto the ground. Based on your equipment, the move can feel incredibly quick or somewhat sluggish, yet it's always swifter and more seamless than the dodge rolls found in the earlier games. Certainly, you could plant your large weapon into the ground when wielding such equipment, but that's your responsibility for not just playing ranged weapons (Just kidding — steer clear of the game using ranged options).
Elden Ring's dodging mechanic creates the perfect balance between difficulty and chance, granting chances of triumph while risking the loss of that hope at the slightest mistake. Perfect this move, and you'll obtain more than triumph, but satisfaction.
