New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
