French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French maritime police representative states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
