Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.
