Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
